Covid-19 Testing Q&A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing is the only way to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As COVID continues to spread, testing is the simplest way to keep you, your family, and your community safe from infection.

What are the different types of COVID-19 testing?

There are three different types of COVID-19 testing:

Rapid COVID testing

Antigen tests, or rapid tests, detect COVID proteins within just 15 minutes. Rapid tests are highly accurate, but they’re more likely to identify a positive case if you’re already exhibiting symptoms of COVID.

PCR testing

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is the gold standard in COVID testing. Unlike rapid testing, a PCR test detects the virus’ specific genetic material for the most accurate results possible. If you’re traveling internationally, most airlines require a negative PCR test before boarding.

Antibody testing

If you’ve had COVID, your immune system produces antibodies to protect you against the virus in the future. Antibody testing can help determine whether you’ve had COVID-19 in the past.

What happens during COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing involves taking a sample from the nasopharynx — the space at the top of the throat behind the nose. To collect this sample, your provider places a swab up your nostril. They then repeat the collection process in the other nostril. The entire test only takes a few minutes.

What happens after COVID-19 testing?

Rapid antigen tests typically produce results within just 10-15 minutes, but PCR results can take a few days. With a PCR test, most people receive their results within 24-72 hours. If your results return positive, it’s important to quarantine at home and avoid public outings. Self-isolation is the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While most people recover from COVID with proper rest, fluids, and over-the-counter (OTC) medication, some experience more severe symptoms, such as:

  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Congestion
  • Persistent cough
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea and vomiting
